THIS INEVITABLE TALK

There is a talk we must have

and I'm pretty certain

neither of us will like it.

I am secure

our conversation will turn ugly

and angry

and agitated

and acerbic

and violent.

I'm sure that the words

we are about to speak

are permanent

a tattoo across our relationship

an earthquake about to occur.

We are hurtling toward

something hideous

something dangerous

something hazardous

that may crush the two of us.

It won't be pretty

this conversation

we are about to have;

it may well be dreadful

so forgive me

if I attempt

to escape this inevitable

as long as I can.
