It's a cover

back in the sixties.

And maybe

at first

the song was known as

'Soft Cell's cover cut'

but now

its former identity

is swept into the dustbin

it's entirely their song

(even so far as copyright).

They appropriated it

they own it

they are, to the world,

the sole whole masters

of the cut.

And that's what I want.

not untested

not untouched.

much of the town

and have been tasted in return.

and performed by another.

but I yearn

more than anything
