OLD SHOES

You are the old shoes.

Reliable, comfortable, consistent,

easy to slip into.

You are the comfortable shoes.

Omnipresent, familiar, worn.

You are the familiar shoes

which, despite their pleasures

must eventually be discarded

sent to the scrap heap

to be recycled

as something even lesser

than old shoes.

There is no shame in this fate.

You will be helping some

more deserving sole

in your new place.

It is a better world you will be entering

once you've been tossed aside.

There is pride to be found

in your existence

as old shoes

made new

in some bum's eyes.

It is good to be the old shoes.

...You understand what I'm saying?
