BOY TO MAN

There is a boy

who is told

not to put his hand in the furnace

else he'll burn it

again.

I am that boy

grown older

- no wiser -

but sadder

and yet

despite it all

still hopeful

that this time

I'll feel the fire milder,

be more calloused,

be cooler, calmer

in the face of disaster.

Older am I,

from boy to man,

- though no wiser -

but just as wishful

far a less heated future.
