LAST WEEK

Last week,

we talked about the future.

We considered dance bands

and silver patterns

and announcements and advocates

and associates and - jokingly - annulments.

Last week,

we were thinking about what we could do

what we should say

how we would act fifty

- and a half - years from now

when we looked back

on now

and how young we were:

so young,

so innocent,

so naive to think that it would all unfold for us

freely, gorgeously

like a fifty-year flower

that would only continue to blossom in beauty

through all of its glorious existence.

Last week,

we laughed at how happy we would be

in the future.

The far future.

I doubt if our predictions then

bear any weight now.
