LILY


When I awoke
I found a flower by my side
instead of her.
A single lily shared my bed
as opposed to anything
- anyone - else.


The lily lay upon a note
for some words
are better read than said.


The lily told me thank you.
the lily said goodbye.
The lily freed me from her shadow
- or tried to
because, as long as its scent stays with me
so will she.


Tomorrow, or the next day
there may be a sickly smell,
and that, too,
may remind me of her.
