MY FIRST OPEN MIC

The sharp lights that dark night

put everything right in perspective.

I was separate from the others

I was different

unique.

I stood before the spare crowd

awaiting their appreciation.

Spotlighted, in their sites

I was the center of attention.

I spoke.

I did my thing.

I performed.

I wowed the crowd

- I could tell,

by their wide wide mouths

and stunned silence.

I was awful

atrocious.

I acted ugly

and was unimpressive.

My first open mic

was an embarrassment.

A shameful act of incompetence

free of excuses.

I was downright bad.

But soon

I got better.
