PURGATORY III

This is a white night.

Snow rests as far as I can see

and I know

I shall net rest

until I've done my part

to cut into that icy surface

and remove that beautiful obstruction

to civilization.

As I child

a day like this would be heaven

where I could play in the fields of the lord

loving the flakes

and the freedom they offered.

As a child

I saw one side of the snow

but now

the coin has turned.

So it is not heaven

to see these crystals fall

nor is it hell

for it is far too cold for that space.

I stand now

in the middle of purgatory

knowing I must repay

some past sin

forcing myself toil

through the snow

until I find forgiveness

or a path to the street.
