UGLY DUCKLING


Someone has to be the ugly duckling,
the wretched stepsister, the horrid caterpillar.
Someone must hide in shadows,
so there's room in the light.


Some must be blind so that we can see
and some must starve so we can feed.
Everyone has their own turn under the stars,
a chance to shine
a potential to be
except for the unlucky
the untouchables,
the overturned worm.


Someone has to be the ugly duckling.
