THE WORST

I think it will be easier

for me

if I continue to believe

that no good can come of this.

that you will not speak to me

that I am dying.

If there is even a chance

things will end well

I will hope and pray for that

and then

of course

I won't have a prayer.

So I must worship

further

at the altar of pessimism

stick my head

deep in the sand

believe only the worst

and then

perhaps

I may be pleasantly surprised.
