THE MASONS

Like a fourth-class citizen

her family treats me

with their special tongue

and their foreknowledge.

They finish each others' stories

know each other

and her

so much better than I ever could

her father explains

with his jokes

her mother presents

with her patronizing pats.

They are a masonic society

she and her siblings

that I will never be allowed to join.

They keep me foreign

as they remains foreigners to my friends and folk.

Every word they say is different

unique from all I have previously experienced.

And though I try to crack their codes

raise the veil of secrecy

their behavior is all greek to me.
