THE SEQUEL

The way they told it

it was a miracle

but for me, it was a horror

a freak show

one that I'll never forget.

They killed him

that much is true

and we buried him

and, optimistic

we waited for him to come back to us

for stranger things had happened:

fermented water

bread breeding like bunnies

and that guy to lazy to die.

He didn't usually repeat his tricks

but this time...

well, we had faith.

And this time

there was some joy in repetition

as he returned to the scene of the crime.

But the way they told it

it was good

and he was happy to be back

before he went away again.

But the truth of the matter?

He was a ghost

a zombie

undead before us

shuffling, shambling

rambling about what he'd seen

afterwards.

It was awful.

He was nothing like what we expected

and nothing good could come

from his re-emergence

for the cause.

So we returned him from whence he came

and reclaimed the story

as it's been told

again and again

so often

that sometimes I think I must have misremembered.

But surely not.

The truth of the matter is

the light came back stained

and the life we so loved

the flame that we all followed

when it did return

three days later

we snuffed it out.
