SPY

She says nothing

nothing true

nothing meaningful

she speaks barely at all

because she doesn't know

who may listen.

There is no way for her to ensure

that the ear

that hears her words

- the one who is supposed to -

is the only one attentive

to what she cares to say.

She doesn't know

who would care for her thoughts.

She doesn't know

why they might pay attention.

She doesn't know

how they would pay such close attention

that she needs to stay silent

for all time

for fear of being monitored

overheard

known.

She doesn't know what engages her fears

entices them

excites her imagination

to believe

- to know -

that she is being spied upon

eavesdropped

captured in someone's memory

in someone's gaze

But

she knows it's true.

She knows there is someone

someone untoward

someone sinister

who is collecting her thoughts

so she keeps them hidden

disguised

so no one would believe

what she says

because she never says anything.
