GUMBO

This gruel

this burning concoction

you may claim it is delicious

but I say it�s dangerous.

With its stewish spices

and the different flaming flavors throughout

I do not know what makes it burn me so

and because of its design

I may never do.

This gumbo

it much be divided.

To be controlled

it must be separated

into its individual elements

so that I may quantify

qualify why I hurt from its heat.

The peas go here

while the okra is there.

This fiery liquid shall be kept in the bowl

and the shrimp

with its curious shell

- put the shrimp aside!

When I understand this soup

then, perhaps, I can enjoy this dangerous taste.

When it is safe,

then I shall dine.
