ODE TO TEX RITTER

As the third greatest cowboy of his generation

the greatest generation of cowboy singers

he was a man of accomplishments

a man or renown

a man who had earned his name for his day,

and each one following.

Tex Ritter was a man of destiny

and his children

his children would go forth and multiply

in his name

bringing his deeds to a grateful world.

And they did.

And the legend of Tex grew and grew

until somehow

it was the preacher and not the sermon

that was remembered.

And finally, after decades of dedicated service

a new hero was brought to the masses

no longer a cowboy

no longer a singer

but a prophet for a new generation

raised on different ideals

hailed by a simpler sort.

And it was good

for John

but for the father of the son,

his ghost was given up

and no one remembers Tex anymore.
