ROME

Rome burned

and rose, repeatedly.

Rome, the Eternal City

the center of the world,

was devastated in its prime

by fire.

Nero watched it end

then made it new.

It was crushed.

It was cursed.

and it was recreated

from its own ashes.

Built in wood

but remade in marble

the greatest of classical civilization

lasted, was renewed.

Rome persevered.

Rome fell and rose.

Rome died and was reborn.

Rome was in the past

then entered the future

and lasted for eternity.

Rome was stronger

that what beset it.

Rome endured,

despite the threats

despite the fire.

Do you suppose, then

you and me

we could be a little bit more like Rome?
