SOMETHING ELSE

The cat on my street

is adorable, sleek

affectionate - and a predator.

Carcasses of mice

litter the street about us

and I've seen Missy tear into one

or two - live.

She's a stone killer

as much as she can be

when she can shed the domesticity

she's worn so well,

the creature of the night that emerges

- well, it's beautiful.

Of course,

I wouldn't want to meet

Missy in a darkened alley

in my Disney suit.

Now, our pets are pretty,

and poised and precious

but they have another side:

a hateful side

a dangerous side

a dark side and,

sweet as they may seem,

on occasion,

they may be something

else.

Our pets do not always serve us.

Sometimes, they seek

something more.

Perhaps they're waiting...
