CHANGING MINDS, CHANGING TIDES

In seasick waves we rise and fall

the weight of passion carried past

the equal mass of reasoned thought

until they switch and logic rules

and we return to actions planned.

A seesaw act that we repeat

on and on and on and on

for years upon beyond all dreams

and then the rhythms alter, and

we choose to do things differently.

Our lives, first loved and then just lived

become quite less as days go forth

but then return, tide-strong and fast

to our passionate days of youth

and then flip back to what they were.

Is there a point to waffling so?

Must we undecide like this?

Is there a way we can remain

upon a path - and never change?

Can we stay young, with verve and guile

unborn within us evermore?

Or must we change as day by day

we seesaw on, decade by score?

I wish I knew why we live

our lives so strangely flexible

our moods our plans altered each week

just like the travels of the tide.
