HIDDEN CHILD

It is not that you live a little differently

that you chose a distinct path

that is the problem.

The problem is that you lied about it.

You deceived us

you made us believe you were one of us

and, complacent, serene

we allowed you past our gates

into our home

and let you work your voodoo.

Had you informed us of your identity

all would have been well.

Perhaps we would have given you up.

Perhaps we would have sent you to the dogs

but that would have been above-board

honest.

It would have been the right thing to do.

You betrayed us

with your dishonesty

and we may never forgive you for that

which may be your final burden

upon that burning stake.
